Kanimozhi's arrest: A temporary setback for DMK

So do you think the Congress is a paragon of virtue?" asked an angry member of Parliament from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam defending his mentor M Karunanidhi's daughter and party MP Kanimozhi's arrest on Friday.

Those of us who are celebrating the judgment of Judge O P Saini should know that despite the shock waves of arrest of Kanimozhi and the shame for serious allegations in the charge-sheet within the DMK, it will be a temporary setback for the sturdy regional party.

Those who have met former minister A Raja in Tihar jail are claiming that he is fully confident that he will be able to fight the case in a court of law.

Sony to take on Apple with launch of first tablet PCs

Sony, a laggard in the booming tablet market, unveiled its first tablet computers in an ambitious attempt to grab second place in the market created and still dominated by Apple's iPad. The new gadgets will use an operating system based on Android 3.0, Kunimasa Suzuki, deputy president of the consu mer products and services group, told reporters in Tokyo on Tuesday.

One of the models will have two screens, he added.

Star Wars: Rajnikanth vs. Amitabh Bachchan

If the buzz is to be believed, the next Rajnikanth film, 'Rana', will not only have the superstar in three roles but will also have the towering Big B to add to the star power. That Rajnikanth's earlier year hits are unabashed remakes of Amitabh Bachchan is not a secret.

And the two superstars from the north and south of India are not coming together for the first time. From 'Andha Kanoon' to 'Giraftar', the two have shared on-screen chemistry. Thank You's opening at theatres worse than Faltu

A few hours before the fourth season of the Indian Premiere League (IPL) kickstarted on Friday, Akshay Kumar’s co-production with UTV Motion Pictures, Thank You, commenced its theatrical run. According to a section of trade, it opened to occupancy rates lower than Faltu, Vashu Bhagn ani’s re-launch movie for his son Jackky, that released on April 1, along with Game, which has already been written off.

Sanjay Ghai, COO, Mukta Arts Ltd, attributes the slow start of Thank You to the ‘ghisa-pita’ (done-to-death) content. “The story is not new and the score is not great either. The movie is low on entertainment quotient,” he says, adding that although it is faring better with the masses, the multiplex audience doesn’t seem to have liked it. “So, it’s unlikely that the film will sustain after averaging a 35 per cent opening.” Comparatively, Faltu opened with 40 per cent in 890 screens.

IPL-4 set to start with a bang on high viewership

The fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to be bigger, if not better, in terms of business even without Lalit Modi at the helm. It will be bigger largely on account of ticket sales and sponsorship deals clinched individually by the ten teams has been able to muscle in for itself.

To top it all, television viewership-the big money spinner for the IPL-is expected to grow by 20% from 143 million that the tournament clocked last year. On the back of this figurencreased viewership , SET Max, the official broadcaster of the tournament, expects to rake in a plum Rs 1,000 crore in ad revenue, up from about Rs 700 crore it pocketed last year.

The growth has been consistent over the last three editions of IPL.

"We have seen this trend from the first edition of the tournament, when the viewership was about 90 million. The number has now jumped significantly. The trajectory is expected to continue this year too," said Rohit Gupta, president, Multi Screen Media, which owns SET Max.
